Shoebox Train

• Get a bunch of old shoeboxes and tape plain white paper to the outsides and let the kids have fun decorating them to be train cars, allowing the birthday boy or girl make the engine. Be sure to provide lots of markers, glitter, beads, and whatever else you think kids might want to use in their decorations. When the kids are finished, help them link the cars together with paperclips, then let them take turns pulling their train across a smooth floor.

Choo Choo Chug-A-Long

• In this game, one child starts as the Engine, another as the Caboose, and all of the other children are Cars. The children place their hands on each other’s shoulders (as in a Conga line) with the Engine in front and the Caboose at the back. The Engine will move forward, and as he or she does, the other Cars must follow his or her motions exactly. This means the other children will follow the engine’s path, in addition to mimicking any motions the engine makes, such as pulling an imaginary train whistle, raising a left or right arm above the head, or skipping or hopping instead of walking forward. However, the Caboose does not have to mimick these motions, and instead focuses on watching how well the other children mimick the Engine. The Caboose can call another child that makes a mistake to become the new Caboose, and that child must move to the back of the line. The old Caboose then moves to the front of the line and becomes the new Engine, and the game continues for as long as the children desire to play.

• If you have episodes of Thomas and Friends available, put them on as a background to the Thomas-themed party activities. Or, have everyone settle down to watch the show and let your child select his or her favorite episodes to share.

Thomas and Friends Coloring Time

• On the Thomas and Friends website under the Activities section, free coloring sheets of many of the characters are available. Print out as many copies as you need, buy a few boxes of crayons to hand out to the kids at the party and let them have a great time coloring their favorite characters.

When it is time for your child to blow out the candles, get a relative to snap the picture while you get in the shot beside your child.
• Make sure you have everything you need before the party begins. Once the party starts, you probably will not be able to drive to the store to get anything you may have forgotten. To help avoid this problem, make a party checklist the night before and ensure everything you need is on it.
